FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT AREAS CAN BE TREATED WITH LASER HAIR REMOVAL?

Laser Hair Removal can remove hair from all parts of the body including:

  • The face (including the beard area for men)
  • Legs
  • Arms
  • Underarms
  • Back
  • Chest
  • Bikini area
  • Belly button

WHO CAN HAVE LASER HAIR REMOVAL?

Laser Hair Removal is a popular treatment for both women and men. Unlike many lasers, Artisan’s Laser Hair Removal system can safely and effectively treat a range of skin tones and hair types. The laser system delivers a light source with a longer wavelength which allows it to be used safely and effectively on patients with light, dark and tanned skin. It can also treat fine hair, like on a woman’s upper lip, just as effectively as the coarse hair on a man’s back.

DOES IT HURT?

Our laser machine has an innovative cooled handpiece that increases comfort during treatment. The cooling tip also minimises the adverse skin reaction commonly seen with other lasers. Some patients experience a mild pinching or stinging sensation as each pulse of laser energy is delivered. No local anaesthesia or pain medication is required; however, some patients may prefer to use a topical anaesthetic when sensitive areas are treated.

HOW DOES LASER HAIR REMOVAL WORK?

The laser delivers a single wavelength of light targeting the coloured pigment in each hair follicle. This destroys the follicle’s ability to regrow hair while protecting the surrounding tissue from heat damage. The laser’s wavelength of light is specifically tailored to target hair follicles for superior results.

WHY DO SOME CLINICS OFFER INTENSE PULSED LIGHT (IPL) HAIR REMOVAL AND SOME OFFER LASER HAIR REMOVAL?

The licensing required in Queensland to own and operate a laser machine is very strict. However, intense pulsed light (IPL) is currently unregulated by Queensland Health so beauticians are able to offer IPL services without necessarily having sufficient training or experience. Lasers are also very expensive to own and maintain so many clinics cannot afford to use a true laser.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN INTENSE PULSED LIGHT AND LASER HAIR REMOVAL?

Advertising surrounding hair removal treatments can often be quite ambiguous and misleading. Some clinics falsely use the word ‘laser’ in advertising and others suggest that intense pulsed light is an alternative equivalent to laser. The truth is that whilst intense pulsed light’s multiple wavelength technology is suitable for other rejuvenation treatments, a laser machine’s single wavelength technology is better suited for hair removal as the hair shaft and hair follicle absorb the tailored wavelength better.

HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?

We recommend 3-6 treatments for most areas. However, the number of treatments required for optimal long-term benefits depends on multiple factors such as hair thickness, the area treated and your hair’s growth cycle.

Did you know that each hair actually grows at a different rate and goes through three distinct phases; growth, regression, and resting? Laser Hair Removal treatments work by disabling the hairs that are in the active growth phase at the time of treatment. Since other hairs will enter this active growth phase at different times, additional treatments are necessary to disable all of the hair follicles in a given area.

HOW OFTEN DO I HAVE TO COME FOR MY LASER HAIR REMOVAL TREATMENTS?

We normally recommend treatments at 6 -10 weekly intervals, though it will depend on hair thickness and the area being treated.

WHAT SHOULD I DO TO PREPARE FOR TREATMENT?

We ask that you shave the treatment area prior to treatment. Keep in mind that hair in the treatment area cannot be plucked or waxed for up to 4 weeks prior to treatment.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE TREATMENT?

You are able to return to your normal day to day activities straight after treatment. Patients experience few side effects, though slight reddening and local swelling of the skin, similar to a sunburn, are the most commonly noticed. These effects typically subside after a few hours. Consult with your Artisan laser technician for complete information on the benefits and risks of treatment.

Three to seven days after treatment you may experience what seems to be regrowth of hair. Actually, most of these hairs are being shed as a result of your treatment and are not regrowing. Keep in mind that you mustn’t pluck or wax the treated area in between your Laser Hair Removal treatments.

WHO WILL BE PEFORMING MY TREATMENT AND WHAT QUALIFICATIONS DO THEY HAVE?

Deborah is Artisan’s Laser Hair Removal specialist and she is fully qualified and licensed with Queensland Health. Deb also holds a Laser Safety Officer certificate and has been performing laser hair removal treatments for the past 7 years. To obtain a Laser License in Queensland clinicians are required to complete many hours of supervised training. Our lasers are regularly audited and Queensland Health have given their approval with the yellow Certificate of Compliance sticker which is displayed in our laser treatment room. Before you go anywhere for a hair removal treatment be sure to ask to see the practice’s laser licence and yellow compliance sticker so that you know you are receiving treatment from a certified clinic.

HOW DOES LASER HAIR REMOVAL COMPARE WITH ELECTROLYSIS?

Electrolysis is a tedious, invasive, and painful process that involves inserting a needle into each individual hair follicle and delivering an electrical charge to them one at a time. Electrolysis often requires years of treatments at regular intervals. By delivering light energy to hundreds of hair follicles at a time, Artisan’s Laser Hair Removal technology effectively treats an area much faster.
